India is very popular for its spices, not only because these spices add flavor to your food but also because all these spices have a lot of medicinal benefits. One such spice in the list is turmeric. Also known as the Indian saffron, turmeric is rich in an active compound known as curcumin, which has many scientifically proven health benefits. Derived from the root of flowering plant curcuma longa, turmeric is an integrated part of Ayurvedic medicine and traditional healing.

Due to the various benefits that turmeric has on our health, it has been touted as one of the superfoods that can prevent cancer and ease depression. Listed below are some of the benefits that turmeric can have on your health if you make sure to include it in your everyday diet.

  1. Anti-inflammatory - Curcumin present in turmeric is proved to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial effects. It has been found in the studies that since curcumin is badly absorbed in the human body, adding some black pepper to meals that contain curcumim can help in the better absorption of curcumin. This element of turmeric makes it a strong and reputed element in the medical world.

  1. Aids in digestion - For years turmeric has been consumed for its digestive qualities. Nausea, Indigestion, and an upset stomach are some of the very common problems that turmeric can relieve easily. Daily consumption of ½ teaspoon of turmeric will help improve the gut environment and make it more suitable for a healthy gut.

  1. Prevents Alzheimer's Disease - The anti-inflammatory property of turmeric helps soothe the chronic inflammations of Alzheimer’s and improve the conditions of persons suffering from the disease. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that causes brain cells to shrink and not function properly; consumption of turmeric can help release the inflammation of the brain cells and hence provide some relief. However, there is no strong evidence that turmeric can cure the disease, but circumin, which has antioxidant properties, may help the cells rejuvenate and perform better.
  2. Boosts Immunity - Your body functions in the sink. Nothing is working independently. Therefore when you take care of the basics of your body mechanisms, the entire cycle of functions goes well inside and you face less chances to experience frictions inside your environment. Any coral infection or any unwanted change in the inner environment can be handled well by your body if it is strong enough to function well and can cope up with minor changes. When these unwanted infections are handled well, your body is proved to have a better immunity. Daily use of turmeric in your diet without overdoing it will improve the functions of your body as a whole and hence will give you a better immunity to fight diseases.
